Through classroom lectures and hands-on skills practice, this course prepares students to test for both national and state EMT certification. In addition to core EMT training, students will earn certifications in NIMS/ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800, HazMat Awareness, Bloodborne Pathogens, Introduction to Vehicle Rescue, Emergency Vehicle Driver Training (EVDT), and BLS/CPR.

Students should expect to put in work outside the classroom, including reading and homework assignments. Strong time management and accountability are essential for success in this program.

To become an EMT in Pennsylvania, applicants must have a high school diploma or GED and be at least 18 years old by the first day of class. They must complete a Pennsylvania-recognized EMT educational program that follows the National EMS Education Standards, including at least 10 patient contacts or assessments in hospital, specialty, or ambulance settings. A current CPR certification, such as BLS, is required and must meet Department of Health standards. Candidates are also required to pass both a written (cognitive) exam and a practical (psychomotor) skills exam. In addition, they must pass a criminal background check, which typically includes Pennsylvania State Police records and a Child Abuse History clearance, with no felony convictions permitted.
